The SoHo Survival Guide: How to Do Green Lemon Like a Local
If you live in Tampa, you know that South Howard Avenue (SoHo) isn't just a street; it’s a lifestyle. And smack in the middle of the madness, anchoring the district like a neon-soaked lighthouse, is Green Lemon.
As a local, I have a love-hate relationship with SoHo, but I have a love-love relationship with Green Lemon. It’s loud, it’s chaotic, and it’s consistently one of the best times you can have with your clothes on.
But if you go in blind, you might get overwhelmed by the music and the massive menu. Don't worry. I’ve spent way too many Friday nights here. Here is your local’s playbook on what to order, what to skip, and how to navigate the menu like a pro.
Step 1: Join the "Crispy Trees" Cult
I am going to say this once: Do not sit down and not order the Crispy Trees ($10). If you tell your friends, "Let's get the broccoli," they will look at you like you are the fun police. Ignore them. These aren't steamed veggies. It’s crispy fried broccoli and cauliflower drenched in a spicy buffalo-avocado glaze. It is the single most popular appetizer for a reason.
The "Group Project" Strategy: If you are rolling deep with a crew, just get the Trio Dip ($14). It covers all the bases: Guacamole, Queso Blanco, and Lime Salsa. It stops the arguments about which dip to get.
Step 2: The Taco Math (The Street Trio)
You can order tacos à la carte ($4–$5 each), but the real move is the Street Trio ($15). You get any three tacos plus a side. It’s the best value on the menu.
My "Perfect Trifecta" Order:
Shia La Beef: (Yes, the name is hilarious). It’s spicy shredded brisket with sriracha aioli. It’s rich, savory, and worth the mess.
Gigante Chicken: Basically a buffalo chicken tender in a taco with blue cheese. It hits that late-night craving perfectly.
Yucatan: Seared rare tuna with mango salsa. It’s light and fresh, balancing out the other two heavy hitters.
Local Hack: If you are cutting carbs (because, SoHo), you can swap any tortilla for a Lettuce Wrap or Bibb Lettuce.
Step 3: Bowls > Burritos?
Controversial opinion: The bowls here are better than the burritos. The Chicken & Brussels Bowl ($17) is my go-to "I worked out today but I want to party" meal. It’s grilled chicken, those famous crispy brussels sprouts, bacon bits, and lime caesar dressing. It feels healthy-ish but tastes indulgent.
If you are strictly here for the protein, the Rey Del Mar ($17) is cilantro-crusted rare tuna and jicama slaw. It’s fantastic and won't leave you feeling too heavy to dance later.
Step 4: Hydration (The Fun Kind)
Green Lemon does not play games with their tequila.
The Showstopper: The OG Margarona. You’ve seen it on Instagram. It’s a massive 24oz margarita with a Corona bottle dumped upside down inside it.
House Version: $17
SoHo Version (Reposado Tequila): $21
Warning: These are potent. One is fun. Two is a story you’ll tell next week.
The Spicy Pick: The Caliente ($12). Jalapeño-infused tequila with a Tajin rim. It wakes you up.
The "I Have Work Tomorrow" Pick: The Matchata ($5). It’s iced horchata mixed with matcha. It’s creamy, sweet, and gives you a caffeine buzz without the hangover.
Step 5: The Sweet Finish
You are full. You don't need dessert. Order the Churro Cheesecake ($9) anyway. It’s creamy cheesecake with a cinnamon-sugar churro crust and blueberry compote. The best part? It’s surprisingly Gluten-Free. I don't know how they do it, but it’s magic.
The Local’s Verdict
Green Lemon captures the essence of modern Tampa: it’s vibrant, it’s a little extra, and it’s a damn good time.
Best For: Girls' night out, birthday dinners, or "Pre-Gaming" a night in SoHo.
Parking: Terrible. Don't even try to find a street spot. Valet or Uber.
Wait Time: Expect a wait on weekends. Grab a Free Dive IPA ($7) at the bar while you stand.
Final Score: 5 out of 5 Limes. See you at the bar!
